Tantra
...the Twelfth Dalai Lama had once experienced a vision of Padmasambhava, in which the great guru spoke the following words of prophecy: O Trinley Gyatso, supreme lord of truth,You who are my own mind emanation,If you accept the practice of secret mantra byRelying upon a Knowledge Lady [jnanamudra],Tibetan Buddhism will thriveAnd the Dharma Protectors will act.But if you do not rely upon The siddhi of karmamudra [sexual yoga],You will soon die. The Twelfth Dalai Lama died by the age of twenty. Quoted from The Fourteen Dalai Lamas by Glenn H. Mullin (Clear Light, 2001).
In order to make primordial simultaneously arising clear light mind fully and completely manifest, we must totally stop or cease all coarser levels of energy-wind and mind. In order to stop the coarser levels of energy-wind and mind from predominating, we need to generate a greatly blissful deep awareness. To generate a blissful awareness that is sufficiently intense and powerful to accomplish these aims, it is necessary for most persons to rely on a mudra, a sealing physical partner. The reason why the central Buddha-forms in the mandalas or symbolic universes of the anuttarayoga tantra class are mostly in the aspect of a father and mother couple is to indicate this necessity. There is a great difference between relying on a sealing partner with full awareness that doing so is solely to provide the circumstance and source for developing a greatly blissful awareness to be used for the above purposes, and relying on one as a pathway of practice in the manner of a trespasser. Therefore, only especially...
Advice for Keeping the Vows and Beginning Kalachakra Practice The Vow Not to Lose Seminal Energy-Drops Berzin: Many Westerners are married, what about the close bond of not losing (mi-nyams) seminal energy-drops (khu-ba)? His Holiness: What lay householders should do, I don't know. Berzin: Is this just referring to when practicing the complete stage (rdzogs-rim)? His Holiness: What should I say? In Kalachakra, for achieving a devoid form (stong-gzugs), you need supreme unchanging bliss (mi-'gyur-ba'i bde-ba). Kalachakra speaks a great deal about the necessity for maintaining non-weakened seminal energy-drops and therefore not losing semen. That being the case, then if a person practicing the Kalachakra complete stage is a male, it would seem that it is pervasive with the person abandoning home life (rab-byung) and becoming celibate. But, I wonder if that is so? I don't know. Berzin: For instance, Serkong Rinpoche said when you are practicing the...
Here are some interesting quotes from the 14th Dalai Lama regarding sex as taught and understood in the context of Tantric Buddhism. “Being able to have sexual contact without releasing semen is something needed when you practice the advanced stages of the complete stage." - The 14th Dalai Lama (Berzin Archives) ••• "For Buddhists, sexual intercourse can be used in the spiritual path because it causes a strong focusing on consciousness if the practitioner has firm compassion and wisdom. Its purpose is to manifest and prolong deeper levels of mind (described earlier with respect to the process of dying), in order to put their power to use in strengthening the realization of the emptiness. Otherwise, mere intercourse has nothing to do with spiritual cultivation. When a person has achieved a high level of practice in motivation and wisdom, then even the joining of the two sex organs or so-called...
The Second Dalai Lama (16th century) "By relying upon an external consort... who has matured through Tantric initiation, the yogi on the highest levels of the completion stage is led to Great Bliss... For this practice one must understand the oral instructions well and have complete control of the vital energies. Entering into sexual union with a consort, gives rise to the Innate Bliss. This causes the vital energies to dissolve just as at the time of death, and the Clear Light of the mind arises with great strength..." - Transmission of the Wisdom Dakini ••• The Sixth Dalai Lama "I sought instruction at the feet of a renowned lama, But my thoughts continually escaped to my beloved For my mind was full of great compassion." ••• The Seventh Dalai Lama "By the profound yogas of the secret path, such as offering ambrosial...
Meditate on the supreme and unchanging [bliss].With vajra [male sexual organ] placed inside lotus [female sexual organ],brings the winds [vital forces] into the drops [bodhichitta],the drops into the chakras;the movement of drops halted at the vajra [male sexual organ],always rigid, the yogi continually raises fluid [never releasing it].With the yoga of mahamudra [great seal],the descent to the vajra, and by its blessing, the instances of supreme unchanging [bliss],completed at 21,600,will bring the great enlightenment, the attainment of Vajrasattva [diamond soul]. Quoted from Ornament of Stainless Light, an Exposition of Kalachakra Tantra, by Khedrug Norsang Gyatso (15th century AD).
With the pride of vajra holder, the vajra with lotus enters the lotus. With lingam placed into the bhaga, the yogi performs hum phat;the bodhichitta [sexual energy] is not emitted. One's own secret-area five-pointed vajra [male sexual organ] marked with a lotus enters the consort's lotus [female sexual organ]. Within that state the yogi holds the pride of being the vajra-holder main deity Kakalchakra, he utters the syllables hum phat, and dwells within the activity of union arising from placing the father's lingum into the mother's bhaga. This brings the elemental bodhichitta [sexual energy] down to the tip of the jewel, where it is not to be emitted. Quoted from Ornament of Stainless Light, an Exposition of Kalachakra Tantra, by Khedrug Norsang Gyatso (15th century AD).
The Sanskrit word Karmamudra is a technical term utilized in Tibetan Buddhism, specifically in Tantra. The term is derived from karman (act) and mudra (seal), so can be translated as "action seal" or "activity seal." It refers to a secret level of Tantra in which specially prepared initiates - one male, one female - join sexually in order to harness the power of sex for spiritual development. Through the "activity" of sexual energy, the initiate can "seal" their consciousness in the clear light (bodhichitta / Chenresig / Christ). Karmamudra refers both to this type of practice and sometimes to the woman who practices it. Karmamudra practice is known in all major Tibetan schools, especially in the Kalachakra Tantra. The prerequisites for this teaching include initiation into the tradition, proven comprehension of the Sutrayana and Mahayana teachings, and the ability to restrain the sexual energy. That is, emission of the sexual energy (orgasm) is not allowed. The...
The śakti [feminine aspect] of this sādhana [religious practice] is ordinarily the own wife of the sādhaka [practitioner], married according to the Vaidik injunctions; the svaśakti or ādyāśaktī, as she is technically called in Tantra. One's own wife is Ādyā-Śaktī [original or primordial feminine energy] and Sādhana should be done with her aid (Ādyā-śaktīh svadārāh syāt tāmevaśṛtya sādhayet). With her is practised that śaktīsādhana, the aim of which is the acquirement of self-control, which, checking [ceasing] the outward-going current [the orgasm], places the sādhaka upon the path of nivṛtti [cessation of suffering]. Indeed, the Kaulikārcanadīpikā says, "Without ādyā, śakti worship is but evil magic". (Ādyāśaktiṁ vinā pūjā abhicārāya kalpate). It is only the siddha, which term is here used in the special sense of one who has obtained complete control over his...
Marpa returned to India bearing sixty sang of gold. On the way he traversed Nepal, where he met his previous teachers and made offerings. Learning that [his teacher] Naropa had entered the action [a high degree of attainment], he journeyed to the city of Lakshetra in the West and asked for Yeshe Nyingpo who was staying in a forest, attended by a woman of low caste. "When she comes to gather water," he was told, "ask her if you may see him." When she arrived, he made his request. Pointing to a large jar of water she was holding [in other words: her own sexual organs], she said, "Use one-third of this water to bathe, and one-third for drinking." After Marpa had finished bathing [his mind through meditation], the washing water fell back into the vase [of sexual union] and transformed into his white seed-essence (bindu; masculine sexual energy; in other words, he did not spill a drop of fluid, and it returned, transformed]. The woman then performed a [Tantric] yogic exercise over...
This famous story about the Tibetan Saint and Master Milarepa describes his encounter with five well-known Dakini. Dakini are difficult to describe with precision, as they have special properties or attributes that the intellect fails to grasp. To say that Dakini are goddesses falls short of their unique character; to say they are mere nature spirits (elementals) fails to illustrate their great intelligence and wisdom. In Tibetan Buddhism, dakini are generally depicted as fiercely intelligent female divinities who have been known to teach Dharma to initiates, but also come to initiates to learn Dharma. Dakini are often cited as protectors of Dharma, and many well-known scriptures and teachings were given to initiates by the Dakini. The five in this story are said to be sisters (which may be symbolic of the five aspects of the Divine Mother). They also appear in the life story of Padmasambhava, who by teaching them Dharma tames them from being somewhat wild spirits or the elemental intelligences...
"Bliss arises when the inner fire [tummo, Vital Heat] blazes throughout the body,There is bliss when the winds of Roma and Kyangma [the two channels beside the spine] enter into the central channel [in the spine],There is bliss when the bodhichitta [pure sexual energy] descends from above... and the translucent tigle [sexual energy] pervades from below. When the white and red [male and female essences] unite in the middle [at the heart],And the joy of a leakless body satiates one,The whole body is suffused with undefiled rapture.Sixfold is the bliss of the secret yogas." - The Song of the Snow Ranges
In India, sexual magic (Arcanum A.Z.F.) is known by the Sanskrit term “Oordhvareta.” People who practice the Arcanum A.Z.F. in India are called Oordhvareta yogis. The Great Arcanum is found in a Hindustani book entitled Secrets of Yoga. The author is a yogi from Southern India. It causes us great horror to know that the tenebrous black magicians of the Drukpa clan (those who are dedicated to the fatal and horrible black tantra) ejaculate the seminal liquor during their practices of black magic. These black magicians have a fatal technique that enables them to reabsorb the spilled
The following short excerpt from The Natural Liberation of Becoming by Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) describes very serious Tantric practices that train the consciousness to recognize the true nature of illusory appearances perceived after death, when the consciousness is in the "transitional process" approaching a new birth. The goal of the practitioner is to either avoid birth altogether or seek a fortunate birth that will facilitate continued practice. This once-secret scripture is full of very exacting terminology and cannot be taken lightly. The practices given here are utilized only by highly prepared individuals who are keenly skilled in meditation and other psychological technologies. Yet, the value of this scripture is seen precisely in its clear portrayal of the importance of sex in the liberation of the consciousness from suffering. These instructions are to be used by someone who has died, thus these instructions are practiced continually in preparation for death. Note that...
We can assert that Tantra is the essence of Yoga. There exist three types of Tantra: white, black, and grey. Indeed, White Tantra is unique and worthwhile, because neither the orgasm nor the ejaculation of semen exist in it. White Tantra awakens the Kundalini, in other words, the fire of the Holy Spirit. That fire fortifies the soul; it strengthens it and fills it with terribly divine igneous powers. Sex Yoga states, “Poison must be transformed into medicine.” They understand by poison the lure of women and of spirituous beverages. In alchemical terms, we would say that it is necessary to transform lead into gold. Indeed, Yoga is worthless without Tantra. Yoga is worthless without its sexual essence. Brahmins consider the sexual union as equivalent to a divine sacrifice, and the feminine organs as the fire where the sacrifice is offered. The Brahmin woman says the following in one of sacred texts: “If your objective is to utilize me for sacrifice, let it be granted unto...
Three types of Tantras exist in India: first, White Tantra, second, Black Tantra, and third, Grey Tantra. In White Tantra, Sexual Magic is practiced without the spilling of semen. In Black Tantra there is spilling of semen. In Grey Tantra, the semen is and is not spilled; sometimes the semen is spilled, and sometimes it is not spilled. This type of Tantra leads the devotee to Black Tantra. Within Black Tantra we find the Bons and Drukpas of the “Red Cap,” terrible and perverse black magicians [Editor: the author later recanted his comment about the Bons, say they are merely extreme in their efforts, but are not necessarily black]. These malignant people have disgusting procedures in order to reabsorb the semen through the urethra after having miserably spilled it. The outcome is fatal because the semen, after having been spilled, is charged with satanic atoms, which upon re-entering the body acquire the power to awaken the Kundalini negatively. It then...
Tantra: (Sanskrit) Literally, "a continuum or unbroken stream [of energy]." In spite of the opinions (and financial interests) of many Westerners, the term Tantra is not immediately synonymous with sex. The vast majority of traditions of Tantra have degenerated completely and are dangerous. One should study extensively before taking on any teachings or practice of Tantra. Tantra Yoga had been one of the potent powers for the spiritual regeneration of the Hindus. When practised by the ignorant, unenlightened, and unqualified persons, it has led to certain abuses; and there is no denying that some degraded forms of Saktism have sought nothing but magic, immorality, and occult powers. - Swami Sivananda Genuine tantra is an exceptional method of purifying the consciousness of all egotisical elements: lust, pride, envy, gluttony, laziness, etc., but it is not easy or overnight, and requires great...
When serving a karmamudra [spouse], the pure awareness of bliss and emptiness will arise: Composed in a blessed union of insight and means, Slowly send down, retain and draw back up the bodhichitta [the sexual energy], And conducting it to the source [the divine], saturate the entire body. But only if lust and attachment are absent will that awareness arise. Then gaining long-life and eternal youth, waxing like the moon, Radiant and clear, with the strength of a lion, You will quickly gain mundane power and supreme enlightenment. from "The Song of Mahamudra" (Do ha mdzod brgyad ces bya ba Phyag rgya chen po'i man ngag gsal bar ston pa'i gzhung)
Yeshe Tsogyal (eighth century, Tibet) was a consort and disciple of Padmasambhava, the Indian Master of Tantra who helped lay the foundation for Tibetan Buddhism, and who is very highly regarded in Buddhism, second only to the Buddha Shakyamuni. Yeshe Tsogyal recorded many teachings of Padmasambhava, and gave teachings herself. The following is excerpted from her songs, as recorded in "Sky Dancer: The Secret Life and Songs of the Lady Yeshe Tsogyel" by Keith Dowman (Penguin Books - 1989). ••• Tsogyel's Karmamudra Instruction After I had finished, the Nepali girl Kalasiddhi performed many prostrations and circumambulations and then made this request: Mother, when you have vanished into inner space, What should we zap-lam initiates of the Tibet...
Sometime in the eighth century A.D., Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) the Indian Master of Tantra, gave the following teaching to his consort and disciple Yeshe Tsogyal. Though this text is very esoteric and difficult to fully comprehend, it is highly valuable. In particular, this passage stands out, but must be understood in context; in Tantra, bodhichitta is an esoteric term for sexual energy. "If there is leakage of bodhichitta, the Buddha Unchanging Light is slain, and since there is no superior presence to whom such a crime can be acknowledged and thus atoned, such karma as that of the Avichi Hell results. Therefore, with the power of retraction, drawing up 'love' with the base energy of life-force, I held it in the pot of my belly, and maintaining the recollection of pleasure uncontaminated by lust, divesting myself of mind-created samadhi yet not slipping into an instant of torpor, I experienced the ascent of...
